On Sunday, September 10, 2017 students from the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science, along with their Mississippi University for Women colleagues, gathered at the main gazebo on campus for a ceremony in remembrance of the tragedy of 9/11. This fifth annual ceremony entitled, Together in Unity, was conceived of and organized by Goen Hall Director, Latoya Bledsoe. Ms. Bledsoe stated that her impetus for starting Together in Unity was to, “focus more on unity and coming together as a community.” She went on to say, “although September 11, 2011 is a day never forgotten, we can move forward.”
This year’s event featured student remarks from Harpreet Singh, Senior Class Vice President, Gary Nguyen, Student Government Association President, and Hadyen Stokley, Senior Class President, focused on inclusion and tolerance as a recipe for harmony. Several student organizations participated in patriotic musical performances, poetry recitations, and multicultural dance routines. Additionally, there was an official flag folding ceremony conducted by the MSMS Future Business Leaders of America and American Legion Post 69 veterans.
The event concluded with a candlelight ceremony and closing remarks by Ms. Bledsoe. Ms. Bledsoe was very pleased with this year’s turn out and the widespread community support the event received. She stated, “I’ve done this program for several years now, and this one was probably the best one and my most favorite because it brought the MSMS and MUW campus communities together.” In the true spirit of unity, this event crossed campus lines and brought together high school students and college students alike.
