The new school year has begun at MSMS! On Wednesday, Aug. 7 2013 both the Classes of 2014 and 2015 gathered together for the first time at Nissan Auditorium for Opening Convocation.

“Opening Convocation is the ceremony during which we ring in the new academic year,” said MSMS Executive Director Dr. Germain McConnell. “It is the time when we celebrate how far each of these students has come and throw down the challenge that they give MSMS their all during their stay with us.”

The keynote speaker during the ceremony was Dr. Wayne Gann, the Chairman of the Mississippi State Board of Education.

Dr. Gann’s message was one of taking advantage of the amazing opportunities MSMS is providing them. And he challenged the students to become the leaders of Mississippi and the nation.

Columbus Mayor Robert Smith and Mississippi University for Women President Dr. Jim Borsig also spoke to the student body, welcoming them to both Columbus and the MUW campus.

Immediately after the Opening Convocation ceremony classes began, and as experienced seniors and nervous juniors made their way out of the auditorium and toward the academic buildings the sentiment was one of excitement and expectation.

“Right now, we are looking at the future of our state and our nation,” said Dr. McConnell as the students exited. “And that is an awesome responsibility and an amazing privilege.

Currently, 233 students attend MSMS and represent 55 Mississippi counties.
