Students enjoy volunteer opportunities

The Student Affairs team strives to provide the best out-of-classroom experience for our students. Our residential staff does a phenomenal job planning and implementing programs and volunteer opportunities for our students. LaToya Bledsoe, Goen Hall Director, has worked to create a strong volunteer partnership with Contact Helpline that creates opportunities for students to volunteer at the Mississippi State University athletic events by working concessions. “I love working with nonprofit agencies around the Golden Triangle Area to provide volunteer and service opportunities for our students.  You'd be surprised that many Lowndes County residents are familiar with the university (MUW) not knowing that a residential high school for gifted and talented students is on the campus.”

Additionally, our residential staff creates a space for creativity for our students through unique in-hall programming. Resident Assistant, Lexie Montgomery hosted “Let Your Soul Glow with Joe,” a coffee house event hosted in Goen Hall. Students were able to express themselves through poetry and music while enjoying a cup of coffee. Bledsoe added, “Creating such opportunities makes the community more aware and gives us a chance to establish a partnership with agencies such as Contact Helpline, United Way, Families First Resource Center of Columbus, MS Tobacco Free Coalition of Oktibbeha, Clay and ,Lowndes counties, Palmer Home, just to name a few.”
