The 2015-2016 MSMS school year has officially begun, and was kicked off Thursday, August 6 by the school's Opening Convocation ceremony.
Listen to Mr. Shannon Eubanks' entire Opening Convocation speech.
The entire MSMS student body, faculty, and staff gathered in Nissan Auditorium to ring in the new academic year. Also in attendance were Columbus City Councilman Bill Gavin, Mississippi University for Women Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Thomas Richardson, MUW Council Karen Clay (a 1998 graduate of MSMS), Cadence Bank representative Mr. Doug Robertson, and Microtek Medical representative Mrs. Beth Jolly. Cadence Bank and Microtek Medical are both MSMS Partners In Progress.
Opening Convocation's featured speaker was Mr. Shannon Eubanks. Eubanks is principal of Enterprise Attendance Center in Lincoln County, Mississippi, and is a member of the MSMS Class of 1990 - the school's first graduating class.
Eubanks spoke to the students of the unlikely history of the school, and how without the grit and work of political leaders like former Mississippi Governor William Winter, MSMS would not exist.
He then offered advice to both the junior and senior classes.
"Don't panic," he said to the juniors. "Even if you brought your towel."
To the seniors, he encouraged they set an example to the junior class that is worthy of the opportunity MSMS represents.
"How you treat them is how they will treat their juniors and so on and so on," he said. "You are all family now."
Following Mr. Eubanks speech, the MSMS Emissaries once again worked to inspire their junior counterparts by singing "We are Family."
MSMS classes began immediately following Opening Convocation.
