UMC Announces Pricilla Li Scholarship

The University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Medicine has announced the creation of a scholarship fund in memory of late MSMS alumnae Pricilla Li.

Pricilla Li, who was a second year medical student at UMC, passed away late last year at the age of 26. Originally from Clarksdale, Mississippi Li was also a member of the MSMS Class of 2007.

In a letter provided by UMC, the new scholarship will go to a second year medical student who "demonstrates the selfless kindness, genuine compassion, and spirit of service that Pricilla practiced in her everyday life."

UMC is currently asking for donations to help fund the scholarship. For more information about the scholarship please contact UMC Manager of Annual Giving, Sanette L. Langston-Smith at slangstonsmith@umc.edu or at 601-815-3155. You can also give directly to the scholarship by clicking here.

The full content of the letter regarding the Pricilla Li Scholarship Fund that was sent to MSMS by UMC is below.

"Dear Friend:

The first few weeks of medical school were a huge blur for me. There were new people, new classes, new buildings; everything was new and exciting and terrifying all at the same time. It was probably during one of those crazy first few days that I met Pricilla Li. One of the things I do clearly remember is the first time I heard her laugh. It was a laugh that came way down deep in her stomach and gathered steam on the way out.

Her laugh and her smile…That’s what I like to remember when I think about Pricilla.

I will never forget December 6, 2014. You see, her family and friends are not the only people who lost Pricilla that fateful day. Pricilla was going to be a doctor and not just any kind of doctor. Pricilla was going to be the type of doctor that other doctors trusted to care for their loved ones. When she died, the world lost a soul who was truly committed to selflessly serving others.

To honor her exceptional legacy of selflessly serving others, her family and friends have established the Pricilla Li Scholarship Fund, at the University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Medicine. The scholarship will go to a second year medical student who demonstrates the selfless kindness, genuine compassion, and spirit of service that Pricilla practiced in her everyday life. As her medical student classmate and friend, I am supporting their efforts to raise funds for this scholarship and was provided your name by her family.

I humbly ask you to make a tax-deductible donation to this scholarship fund. No amount is too large or too small. Help keep Pricilla’s spirit of service alive. Please make your gift payable to UMMC, on the memo line include: the Pricilla Li Scholarship Fund, and use the enclosed envelope to return your gift. Also for your convenience, you can give online at: umc.edu/pricillalischolarshipfund.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact: Sanette L. Langston-Smith, Manager of Annual Giving, at 601-815-3155 or by email at: slangstonsmith@umc.edu.

On  behalf of Pricilla’s family and friends, thank you for all you do to honor her memory and support the great work that takes place here at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

Respectfully,

Jacob J. Baker
2nd Year Medical Student and Representative for Classmates and Friends of Pricilla Li."
