A popular class at the Mississippi School for Math and Science Leadership Program is It’s All About the Numb3rs. This class, taught by Lauren Zarandona, features unique ways of thinking about numbers. Students learn math skills by experiencing problems made to look different from their average math class. This helps the students understand that math can appear in the world differently than it does in an average math class.
“We are looking at a problem today where we are looking at a picture of a file cabinet and trying to predict how many post-it-notes it would take to cover it,” said Lauren Zarandona. The students will be looking at problems like this one all week. Mrs. Zarandona believes showing the campers situations like this and getting them to figure it out will help them with using math in the real world.
In the class, rising 7th and 8th grade students practice activities involving data analysis and sampling. The class is designed to challenge students in solving problems with math they would use in everyday situations. The staff of MSMS is excited about this year’s camp, and the students participating. As the campers at MSMS would agree, it’s all about the numbers.
