For the past five years, the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science, in Columbus Mississippi has hosted an annual summer camp for gifted and talented middle school students.

This year is one of the biggest years for the camp with 58 rising seventh and eighth graders attending.

“It’s a little scary sometimes. I mean, these are 11, 12, and 13 year-olds who are here for the week. But it’s also exciting, because they have so much energy,” said MSMS Camp Director Rick Smith. “They are so excited, and they are learning so much. For a lot of these kids, this is the first time they’ve had the opportunity to be with this many students who are like them. So it can be really exciting and really energizing.”

Students attending the camp were able to choose from nearly a dozen different course offerings. Classes include Introduction to Robotics, the Magic of Science, Engineering and Teamwork, Music and Math Rocks, and many others.

During the week of the camp, students lived on the campus of MSMS, Mississippi’s only public, residential high school for the academically gifted. In fact, many of the camp’s counselors are themselves MSMS graduates, like counselor Brent Eubanks who not only graduated from MSMS in 2013, but also attended the first ever MSMS camp back in 2010.

“I keep coming back because MSMS and especially the camp have changed me and helped me out and allowed me to do so much more that I wouldn’t have been able to do. So, I feel like I need to help out in any way I can,” said Eubanks.

While the educational exposure these students underwent was wonderful in and of itself, it is the relationships that the campers developed that made this week one they will never forget.
