Before we get into the ACT itself you need to know when the test is going to be held. The chart below will give you the dates of the test, the deadline for registration and the deadline for late registration (which involves paying an additional late fee). In other words, you have only four chances to take the ACT before the February deadline. If you have never taken the ACT or you are not happy with the score you currently have you need to go ahead and sign up for the September testing date.
Registering online is simple, and you can do so here at www.actstudent.org. By signing up online you do not need help from a counselor. You can sign up whenever you wish and handle the whole thing online.
YOUR APPLICATION IS NOT CONSIDERED COMPLETE UNTIL WE HAVE A VALID ACT TEST SCORE ON FILE FOR YOU.
Because some of you out there don’t seem to understand this, let me say it one more time.
YOUR APPLICATION IS NOT CONSIDERED COMPLETE UNTIL WE HAVE A VALID ACT TEST SCORE ON FILE FOR YOU.
Got it? Now, onto the questions:
1. What score do I have to have to get into MSMS?
The ACT test is scored between 0 and 36 points. With 0 being the lowest and 36 the highest a student can achieve on the test. MSMS has NO minimum score for acceptance; however, the better you do on the ACT, the better your chances of getting into the school. Statistically, students with a 20 or higher on the ACT tend to be more successful at MSMS. That doesn’t mean a student with less than a 20 is immediately out of the running, it simply means that student is going to have a harder time getting into the school.
2. What’s the average ACT score at MSMS?
The average ACT score for the entering Class of 2013 is about a 23.6. The highest score made by a student who made it into the school was a 34 and the lowest was a 17. Keep in mind, however, that the student with the 17 had an AMAZING application combined with a near perfect grade point average.
3. How many times should I take the ACT?
MSMS will not penalize you for taking the ACT multiple times. We look only at your highest score, not how often you take the test. For example, if you take the test in September and make a 19 and later take the test in October and make a 22 we will throw out the 19 in favor of the 22. In fact, nearly all students do better after taking the test multiple times. But please keep in mind that ACT will only allow you to take the test 12 times in your lifetime.
4. My counselor said I can’t take the ACT until I’m a senior. What should I do?
Your counselor is mistaken. You can sign up for the ACT when you are in the 6th grade if you want, and are certainly able to take it during your 9th or 10th grade years. If you are having trouble getting signed up go to www.actstudent.org and sign up online.
5. How do I send MSMS my scores?
Our school code is 251-409. This is the first year MSMS has had its own school code, so it might be a good idea and contact us to ensure we received your scores from ACT. You can also get them to us by mailing us a photocopy of the score sheet ACT sent you or printing off your score sheet from ACT and sending it to us. Many schools include ACT scores on student transcripts, so if you've already taken the test (and it's had time to make it into your school's system) then likely it will be included with your transcripts. As always, check with your counselor to make sure this is the case.
6. Enough about ACT, what about my transcripts?
MSMS also requires you send in your transcripts from your freshman year and first semester 10th grade year. If your school does not have sophomore trascripts generated by the end of your first semester sophomore year, you can have your counselor send us copies of your first semester report cards. If you took any high school credit courses in middle school (like Algebra I), we need those transcripts as well. All this information must come from your school. It is likely your counselor is familiar with the MSMS process, but if he or she has any questions, refer them to this website or give them my contact information. As with everything else, we must have all this information by the February 2012 deadline.
